Biography

Paula received her PhD in Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. Brett Finlay. Her research is focused on understanding the impact of early life multiple micronutrient deficiencies on the metabolic impact on the gut microbiome, host, and its role in the double burden of malnutrition. She holds a bachelor’s of science degree in Biobehavioral Health from the Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in Social and Behavioral Science & Health Education and a Graduate Certificate in Maternal & Child Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research experience also includes nutrigenomics and 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry working on various phase II-IV clinical trials. She is a frequent guest lecturer at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and various other organizations and enjoys talking about the “science of health” through her Instagram handle @SistaInScience (Sista in Science).

Paula is an advocate for black representation in academia and STEM. She recently co-organized a seven-part Speakers Series at UBC entitled “Where are the Black People” to address the underrepresentation of Blacks in academia and STEM. An event that earned her the prestigious Dean of Science in Excellence and Service Award.

Paula is an active member of her community and currently holds membership in several STEM-based organizations both in the US and Canada.
